Residential water backup solutions

When the taps run dry, your home keeps flowing.

Water storage and automatic backup systems designed around your property. We assess your home and recommend the right tank, pump and changeover arrangement to help keep water available through municipal interruptions.

More than just a water tank

A complete backup solution, designed for your home.

A tank on its own is only part of the answer. A dependable backup system brings together the right storage capacity, pump, plumbing and automatic controls, so your property can keep receiving water when the municipal supply is interrupted.

Our solutions

Everything working together.

We bring the key parts of a water backup installation together into one practical system for your home or business.

Water storage tanks

Opaque, UV-resistant tanks sized to your household’s usage, the backup period you want to plan for and the space available.

Booster pump systems

Pumps selected against your required flow and pressure, with dry-run protection and isolation valves for servicing.

Automatic changeover

Level sensing and control arrangements that move between municipal and stored water, with the supplies kept safely separated.

Backup power compatibility

Where your inverter has enough continuous and surge capacity, the pump may keep running during a power interruption. We check first.

Plumbing & installation

Tank position and base, pipe routes, isolation points, a screened overflow and the connection to your existing plumbing.

Servicing & maintenance

Keep the system in good order with checks of the pump, controls, valves, overflow and storage components.

Images are illustrative of typical residential installations.

How it works

How a municipal water backup system works.

The exact configuration is selected for your property, but a typical automatic system works in three situations.

Municipal supply available

The system can replenish the storage tank as designed, maintaining a reserve.

Municipal supply interrupted

The stored water can supply the household through the appropriately designed pump and changeover arrangement.

Power backup

Where the inverter system is suitably sized and compatible, the pump may continue operating during a power interruption.

The system must be designed by appropriately qualified professionals, with safe separation of the municipal and stored-water supplies and the applicable plumbing and electrical requirements considered.

A representative example

What a typical home system might include.

This is an example to show how a system comes together, not a standard package. Tank size, pump and controls are chosen after we assess your household’s demand, the site and your existing plumbing.

Example scenario

ComponentRepresentative specification
Storage tank5,000-litre opaque, food-grade water storage tank
Tank installationSuitable level, structurally adequate base
Booster pumpInitially assess a 0.75 kW class variable-speed pump
Flow targetApproximately 30–40 litres per minute, subject to pressure and pump-curve verification
Higher-demand optionA larger pump, potentially around 1.1 kW, if actual demand requires it
ControlsAutomatic level sensing and pump protection
ChangeoverSuitable automatic municipal / tank supply arrangement
Whole-house filtration3-stage (triple) Big Blue system: sediment, activated carbon and carbon block cartridges, fitted after the pump with isolation valves and a bypass
ProtectionDry-run protection, isolation valves and appropriate backflow / cross-connection prevention
OverflowProperly screened and safely directed overflow
Backup powerVerify inverter continuous and surge capacity, pump starting characteristics and battery reserve

We also install other tank sizes and pump configurations. Actual backup duration, flow and pressure depend on your household’s usage and the installed system, and inverter compatibility is confirmed during the assessment. Prices are quoted per property.

The BHG approach

A solution shaped around your requirements.

From a family home to a busy workplace, a properly planned water reserve can help reduce disruption when the municipal supply is unreliable. It starts with understanding how much water you use and how your property is connected.

Property-specific design

Recommendations based on your layout, usage and installation space.

Right-sized storage

A practical reserve for the outages you want to prepare for.

Automatic operation

Less need to switch valves or operate equipment by hand.

Power considerations

Inverter or generator compatibility checked for pump operation.

Safety-conscious setup

Backflow prevention, overflow and pump protection accounted for.

Ongoing support

Servicing to keep your installation in good working order.

Don't wait for the next outage to think about your water supply.

Helpful information

Frequently asked questions.

Some of the things to consider when planning a water backup installation.

It depends on how many people live in the home, your daily usage, how long an outage you want to plan for and whether the system will supply the whole property. We recommend a capacity after assessing your household.

For some households it may, but not for all. Our example assumes a four-person household’s typical usage. Your actual backup period depends on how much water your household uses during an outage.

No. That is a representative starting point. We can recommend a larger or smaller tank, a different pump, or a multi-tank arrangement to suit your demand, site and plumbing.

An appropriately designed system can switch to stored water automatically when the municipal supply is interrupted. The control method is selected to suit your existing plumbing, with the municipal and stored-water supplies kept safely separated.

It may, if your inverter or generator has enough continuous and starting (surge) capacity and battery reserve. We check the pump and your backup power system for compatibility before recommending this.

Flow and pressure depend on the pump selected, pipe sizes and your home’s layout. We verify these against the pump’s performance curve during design rather than promising a figure up front.

Most existing homes can be assessed for a retrofit. Space, access, pipe routes, the municipal connection and your current plumbing will shape the final design.

A few details and photos help with an initial recommendation. A site visit is usually needed to confirm measurements, pipework, pump requirements and the final installation scope.
